CLASSIFICATION OF EPILEPSIES IN CHILDHOOD 139 Seizure Classification
نویسنده
چکیده
Early discussions on epilepsy rarely differentiated between epilepsies in childhood and those in adult life. The history of classification of the epilepsies might be defined in three major eras: the philosophical era before the twentieth century, marked by patient observation and, to a large degree, philosophical speculation as to the nature of the disease; the era of the localizationalists and pathologists, spanning roughly the first half of the twentieth century; and the present molecular era, including neurochemistry and particularly receptor pharmacology, the physiology of excitatory and inhibitory systems, and molecular biology.

To the Editor: Inspired by C. P. Panayiotopoulos’ letter to you and F. Andermann’s response about epilepsy of Kozhevnikov (Epilepsia 2002:43:948–9), I would like to defend the famous name of John Hughlings Jackson because it seems to me his importance is underestimated. His priority in study of convulsions in brain connected to motor cortex is obvious. He was the first to use epilepsy as an ins...
متن کاملThe Determiners of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Surgery Outcome in a Developing Country
Background: Epilepsy surgery has become a successful treatment option for patients with drug-resistant epilepsies. Objectives: This study aimed to assess temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) surgery outcome and its association with epilepsy duration, the presence of pre-surgical generalized tonic-clonic seizure (GTCS), and brain MRI findings. Materials & Methods: This retrospective study was perfo...
متن کاملSyndromic classification of patients with typical absence seizures.
The aim of this study is to compare ILAE classification (1989) and Panayiotopoulos' criteria (1997) for absence epilepsies. We studied 455 typical absences (ILAE, 1981) by video-EEG in 43 patients with normal neurological and neuroradiological examinations and interictal EEG with spike-wave complexes higher than 2.5Hz. Syndromic diagnosis was possible in 60.5% and 67.4% of the patients using IL...
متن کاملNocturnal epilepsies in adults
We evaluated the clinical characteristics and the electroencephalographic (EEG) findings by long video-EEG monitoring in 64 successive patients with definite nocturnal seizures. Mental state, neurological examination, neuroimaging and EEG background were normal in all patients. Classification of epilepsies was possible in 42 out of 64 (66%) patients according to the revised Classification of Ep...
